Dr. Sylvester Carrington started in his new position as Field Experience Coordinator at Southern in July, 2017, after retiring from Hamilton County Schools. He is a career educator with well over forty years of classroom and administrative experience in public and private education in Barbados, The Virgin Islands, Georgia, and Tennessee. He has taught science at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and has also done adjunct teaching at the university level.

A native of Barbados in the eastern Caribbean, Dr. Carrington has always loved education in any form. Whether teaching or learning, he is in his element. He grew up in an era when education was a means to a better life. He embraced that love and realized his purpose all at the same time. He continues to work with students to maximize their learning potential. As such, he serves on several appropriate boards and committees, and as Sabbath School Superintendent for his church.

Dr. Carrington is confident that he has chosen the best profession entrusted to mankind, and has never regretted making that decision over forty years ago. He is happiest when working with students in a rich and challenging learning environment, and is determined to remain active in education, and continue making positive and lasting effects on the lives of children and learners.

Dr. Carrington and his wife, Hortense, are the parents of three adult sons, and grandparents to Maximus.
