Study Tours 2017

Stay up date on the current study tours we are offering this summer! 

Summer Intensive - June 11-23, 2017

Our Intensive this summer will be held in the Southeast region, including the Great Smoky Mountains, Chattanooga, and Greater Atlanta areas. Classes will be led by faculty of Southern Adventist University. There will be various classes offered on this trip which include:

  • EDOE 503/504 - Principles and Concepts of Outdoor Education
  • EDOE 515/516 - Nature Study and Field Experience
  • EDOE 573/574 - Outdoor Education Methods

Cost for attending this intensive is $625 per credit hour (Covered for you if you are a teacher in the Southern Union) and $400 for trip expense which includes food, lodging, and transportation during the intensive.

Forest Kindergarten - Collegedale - June 11-30, 2017

This Forest Kindergarten session will be held at SAU, and will be taught by Dr. Jean Lomino. She is a current instructor in our department, and is the founder and director of Wauhatchie Forest School. Classes include on-site observation of Forest Kindergartens in session. Topics include: exploratory play, naturalist skills, emergent curriculum, flow learning, student evaluation and assessment, nature art and more. 

Classes taught will be:

  • EDOE 530 - History and Philosophy of Forest Kindergarten
  • EDOE 531 - Developing Forest Kindergarten Curriculum

Cost for this is $625 per credit hour. This is covered for you if you are a teacher in the Southern Union. 

Geology Study Tour - June 27 - July 13, 2017

Join us as we visit various locations from the Petrified Forest National Park to Yellowstone National Park to study geology and Creation's perspective of origins. This trip will involve nightly camping and students will need to travel either in a caravan of vehicles on in a van, and pay for their own gas and food.

Classes that will be offered on this tour will be:

  • EDOE 585 - Workshop in Outdoor Education: Field Geology
  • EDOE 573/574 - Outdoor Education Methods

Cost for this trip is $625 per credit, and $200 for trip expense which covers camping and park entrances. If you are a teacher in the Southern Union, your tuition is covered. 

Washington D.C. Study Tour - July 16-21, 2017

This study tour will concentrate on studying Natural and American history and will equip teachers with skills in experiential education and outdoor education. Sites that will be visited include Gettysburg, Smithsonian Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, National Monuments, a Baseball game, Mount Vernon, Holocaust Museum, White House, the Capital and more. 

Classes taught will be:

  • EDOE 528 - Interpretation of Natural & Historical Resources
  • EDOE 573/574 - Outdoor Education Methods 

Cost for this trip will be $625 per credit and a $325 lab fee that covers all transportation, lodging, and entrance fees during the week in D.C. If you are a teacher, your tuition is covered by the Southern Union.

Forest Kindergarten - Seattle - July 23 - August 4, 2017

This summer intensive will be centered around the Seattle-Tacoma area and specifically near the Cedarsong Nature School. The classes will be taught by Dr. Jean Lomino. She is a current instructor in our department, and is the founder and director of Wauhatchie Forest School. Classes include on-site observation of Forest Kindergartens in session. Topics include: exploratory play, naturalist skills, emergent curriculum, flow learning, student evaluation and assessment, nature art and more. 

Classes taught will be:

  • EDOE 503/504 - Principles and Concepts of Outdoor Education
  • EDOE 515/516 - Nature  Study and Field Experience
  • EDOE 530 - History and Philosophy of Forest Kindergarten

The cost for this trip is $625 per credit hour and a $400 lab fee to cover food, lodging, and transportation during the intensive.
