The mission of the English Department is to provide general education students with basic communication and literary analysis skills in a Christian context, to offer support services for students needing help with their writing, and to prepare English majors for graduate school and the job market.
An English degree provides great career opportunities in a variety of fields.
Many people don't realize how desperate business employers are for people with solid English ability. It's often a top priority for those looking to hire. Our Professional/Writing Concentration offers training in skills that will make you most attractive to employers, backed by an effective internship program to get you going toward the perfect career in advancement, human resources, public relations, and other management positions.
English at Southern
- Strong Curriculum - Half of our graduates have scored within the highest 10 percent of English majors in a nationwide literature test over the past three years.
- Small Classes - Our professors get to know you personally.
- Faith and Learning - A commitment to the integration of faith and learning adds value not found in secular universities. For instance, did you know that some of Chaucer's writings support Bible reading and righteousness by faith? English majors at public institutions never hear about that side of this author, and so lose out on a critical part of their education.
