Jan Cochrane teaches both at Southern Adventist University and the University of Tennessee–Chattanooga, and also maintains an active private studio. She has taught at Southern since 1991.
Ms. Cochrane holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Tennessee–Chattanooga. She is passionate about teaching singers to use their instruments—their bodies—effectively and efficiently in the act of singing. To this end, she has attained status as a Certified Master Teacher of the Estill International Voice System and certification to teach classical Pilates mat and apparatus classes. She studied Pilates in New York City with Jay Grimes, himself a student of Joseph Pilates. This background, together with more than 10 years of studying the Alexander Technique, makes Ms. Cochrane an especially effective voice teacher.
She has won several classical voice competitions, including local Metropolitan Opera auditions and regional National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions. Her performance background includes seven years in New York City dinner theatre, cabaret, and off-Broadway productions. Her love of and expertise in musical theatre, jazz, and classical styles endear her to students with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests.
