School of Music Scholarship—Majors

Each year the School of Music awards scholarships to qualifying incoming freshmen and transfer students who are music majors. The awards of $15,000, $12,000, $8,000, and $6,000 are distributed over four years.

Requirements
Applicants must currently be studying music with a private instructor, have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and a record of good citizenship. Awards are given on a competitive basis and are based on an audition demonstrating musical ability.

Distribution and Renewal
To qualify for scholarship renewal each semester, the recipient must:

  1. maintain good and regular standing as a university student and music major, taking a full course load (12+ hours)
  2. maintain a minimum university GPA of 3.0
  3. maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in music coursework
  4. earn grades of B or higher in all MUPF courses

The $15,000 award is distributed at $3,750/year over four years. The $12,000 award is distributed at $3,000/year over four years. The $8,000 award is distributed at $2,000/year over four years. 

School of Music Scholarship—Non-majors

Each year the School of Music awards $8,000  and $6,000 scholarships to qualifying incoming freshmen and transfer students.  Awards are given on a competitive basis and are distributed at $2,000/ year and $1,500/year respectively over four years.

Requirements
Applicants must currently be studying music with a private instructor, have a minimum high school GPA of 2.50 and a record of good citizenship. The award is based on an audition demonstrating musical ability.

Distribution and Renewal

To qualify for scholarship renewal each semester, the recipient must:

  1. register for the ensemble that corresponds to the performance area for which the scholarship was awarded (voice—Die Meistersinger, Bel Canto; winds/percussion—Wind Symphony; strings—Symphony Orchestra)
  2. take a second music course (private lessons, a second ensemble, or any other School of Music course)
  3. maintain good and regular standing as a university student, taking a full load (12+ hours)
  4. maintain a minimum university GPA of 2.50
  5. earn grades of B or higher in all MUPF courses

Other Scholarships

Ensemble Scholarships

Several annual ensemble scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 are available to ensemble members on the basis of musical excellence and contribution to the ensemble. Awards are for:

  • all students who are members of the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony concurrently
  • other students at the discretion of the ensemble director

Endowed Scholarships
Through the generous support of alumni and friends of the School of Music and Southern Adventist University, numerous endowed scholarships are available in all areas of the music curriculum. Qualifying criteria vary, and scholarships are awarded by the School of Music faculty.

How to Apply

School of Music Scholarships

  1. Submit the scholarship audition application. You’ll then receive a letter with instructions for the audition.
  2. Audition before the School of Music faculty in your performance area (voice, piano, horn, violin, etc). Video-recorded auditions may also be submitted. The audition should consist of two contrasting selections: one primarily lyrical, the other primarily technical.
  3. DVD submissions must be in standard DVD format. Windows Media format is not acceptable. Please play your DVD on a standard DVD player (not a computer) before submitting to be sure that it functions properly. Defective DVDs will result in delayed consideration for scholarship. Scholarship auditions may be posted to YouTube in lieu of DVD submission. 
  4. Mail application and DVD to:

  5. Materials (scanned application, YouTube audition notification) may also be sent to music@southern.edu.
  6. In order to guarantee consideration for the 2017–18 academic year, scholarship materials must be received by April 15, 2017.

Live Audition Dates

  • Live auditions will be held at Southern on:
    February 16, 4:00–5:00 pm
    March 24, 10:40–11:30 am
  • Scholarship applications are due by Feb. 10 and March 20, respectively. Students unable to attend one of these live auditions are encouraged to submit a video-recorded audition.
