Academic Master Plan 2006-2012 (v 050908) that will influence our planning and budgeting for the next six years. The February 20, 2006 action of the Board of Trustees to "accept the . . . Plan, to affirm the vision, mission, and direction expressed therein, and to encourage academic administration to continue the process of developing and refining the plan" was reaffirmed.
Lord Kelvin (William Thomson, 1824-1907) postulated that "When you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind." (Livio, M. (2002). The Golden Ratio. New York, NY: Broadway Books, p. 1.) Academic Administration publishes an annual Unit Plan that attempts to quantify and evaluate what we believe to be good education, and we are posting it here for examination and comment. A PDF of the 2008-2009 Academic Administration Unit Plan is available here.
Academic Administration is requesting deans of schools and chairs of departments to measure the same performance indicators that are described in the Academic Administration Unit Plan referred to in the previous paragraph. To facilitate this, an Academic Unit Plan Template is offered here as a Word doc. Deans and chairs are encouraged to download this template and to track their school's or department's contribution to the academic health of the university.
An important aspect of a college education is the development of good writing skills. To provide a common framework for the evaluation of student writing the Writing Committee has developed a holistic rubric (scoring guide) that may be used to evaluate planned student writing such as essays, research papers and reports. The use of this instrument is not recommended for essay tests, lab reports, or less formal forms of writing. The committee has also developed an “Explanation of Levels for the Writing Scoring Guide.” This document describes how writing might exceed, meet, partially meet, or fall short of faculty expectations for student writing. Faculty are encouraged to make use of the rubric and the accompanying guide document to inform students of their writing expectations and when evaluating student work. The guide is designed to be adaptable to a variety of disciplines and writing assignments.
Unit Plans for the various academic departments and schools may be found on the Institutional Research & Planning webpage.
