Cylinder seal
This cylinder seal shows two bearded heroes holding a bull by its hind legs. The cuneiform inscription that accompanies the image reads: "Gudea, ensi (prince) of Lagash; Ur-Bau the scribe (is) your servant." The owner of this important seal, Ur-Bau the scribe - the equivalent of a modern secretary of state - served in the court of Gudea, the most important ruler of the emerging city state of Lagash in Southern Mesopotamia.
