Barbara Beckett was born in Washington, D.C., and spent most of her growing-up years in Alexandria, Virginia. At the conclusion of a series of evangelistic meetings with Pastors Roger Holley and Robert Folkenberg, Barbara, her parents, and her brother were baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist church on Christmas day. After completing business school, Barbara worked for a lobbyist for the National Cotton Council in Washington, D.C. In 1971 she was invited to join the Insight magazine staff at the Review and Herald Publishing Association, becoming the editorial secretary for the first three editors and their associates.
Barbara married John A. Beckett and came to Collegedale in 1973 so that John, now a professor in the School of Computing, could complete his education at Southern Missionary College. Mrs. Beckett worked for the director of Admissions and later for the director of Records at Southern. She has two grown sons who are both graduates of Southern Adventist University.
In her spare time, Mrs. Beckett enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, hiking, and traveling.
