“My goal is to convince each and every student who enters my classroom that they are
capable of succeeding, and that I will do everything in my power to facilitate that
success”, says Dr. Loren Barnhurst, Professor of Chemistry. “Chemistry is a fascinating
topic, and one of the greatest joys of being a professor is sharing the intricacies
of science with students who are eager to learn.”
Dr. Barnhurst obtained his BS in Chemistry from Andrews University (1996) and a Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of Denver (2002). He then joined the chemistry faculty at Southern where he has taught Survey of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Advanced Organic Chemistry. He received the ‘President’s Award for Commitment to Student Success’ award in 2004 and the ‘Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence’ award in 2005 and 2009. Most recently, Dr. Barnhurst was named Southern's Adviser of the Year for 2014.
His research interests include how to use technology to enhance student learning in chemistry and the synthesis and photochemistry of sulfur-based systems.
Loren, his wife Becca, and their daughter Claire enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, biking, and during the warmer months of the year, wakeboarding on Tennessee’s beautiful lakes and rivers.
