Sylvia Mayer graduated twice with nursing degrees and has taught Community Health
Nursing twice at Southern Adventist University. She received an AS degree in 1973
and a BS degree in nursing in 1975. In 1981 she received her MS degree in community
health nursing/education from San Jose State University in San Jose, California. Sylvia
taught Community Health Nursing in the School of Nursing from 1981-1984 and returned
to teach again 2004 to 2013. She says it is a great place to come back to!
Sylvia’s nursing experience includes patient care, management and teaching experience. Experience includes patient and in-service education, home health, community liaison and speaker, nurse educator for Southern, Pacific Union College, California State University, Sacramento, East Central University in Oklahoma and consultant for the California Department of Corporations in the Health Services Plan Division. Prior to returning to SAU, Sylvia was curriculum coordinator and medical writer for the Lifestyle Center of America in Sulphur, Oklahoma.
In 2013 Sylvia became the Director of Admissions and Progressions for Nursing, and is the Coordinator of the Consortium Off-campus BS Completion program. Sylvia is married to Dr. Harold Mayer, also a faculty member at Southern Adventist University, and has four sons. Taylor, the youngest, is still at home.
