School of Social Work
Lorri Merchant joined the faculty at Southern Adventist University in 2012 as an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work. At Southern, Mrs. Merchant is the MSW Program Director and teaches both undergraduate and graduate social work courses. She has been teaching in higher education for more than ten years. Prior to coming to Southern, she taught as well as held the role of social work Program Director at Union College for six years. Mrs. Merchant is a clinical social worker, and provided clinical services for many years before becoming a teacher. Her practice has included working as a social worker in family reunification, mental health, healthcare, home health and hospice.
Mrs. Merchant is an Alumni of Southern having received her bachelor’s degree in social work in 1994. She earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas in 1996 and is currently ABD towards her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. Her areas of research include mental health and religion, specifically the intersection of these two areas.
Mrs. Merchant’s hobbies and interests include anything to do with arts and crafts, including glass fusion. She met her husband Greg while a student at Southern. She is the mother of two teenagers, Nick and Larysa.
