ALLIED HEALTH DEGREES
What is Allied Health?
Allied health includes clinical health care professions distinct from medicine, dentistry,
and nursing. In allied health, you are involved with patient health, and you are regarded
as an expert in your field. Some allied health professionals practice independently;
others work as part of a health care team, providing continual evaluation and assessment
of patient needs.
Assistants and Therapists
The allied health professions fall into two broad categories: technicians (assistants)
and therapists/technologists. Technicians are trained to perform procedures, and their
education typically takes less than two years. Education for therapists or technologists
is more intensive and includes acquiring procedural skills. In addition, they learn
to evaluate patients, diagnose conditions, and develop treatment plans.

Entrance to Other Programs
The department also offers one-year curricula to meet requirements for entrance into the following Allied Health degree programs at Loma Linda University and most other university programs:
- Occupational Therapy Assistant (AS)
- Physical Therapy Assistant (AS)
- Radiation Technology (AS and BS)
