Story Abstract

Large donation of collectibles from iconic American author provides extra reason for literature lovers to gather.

Story

Southern Adventist University’s McKee Library is hosting its second annual “Celebrate Twain” event on September 22 at 7 p.m. This year’s featured speaker is Allison Ensor, Professor of English at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Ensor’s presentation will include descriptions of the various sides of Twain, as well as pictures relating to his life.

“I intend to offer a brief overview of Twain's importance in American literature and his continuing popularity with the American public,” says Ensor.

This year’s event holds special significance because the McKee Library is in the process of receiving a large collection of Twain-related items from Dr. Duane Bietz and his wife Eunice. Dr. Bietz is the brother of Gordon Bietz, Southern’s president. Dr. Bietz will introduce some of his donated items at the beginning of the program.

“This is really a great addition to McKee Library,” says Joe Mocnik, Ph.D, director of libraries for McKee Library. “The works that Dr. Bietz and his wife Eunice have accumulated over the years are simply irreplaceable.”

The donated collection features several first-edition novels, signed copies of published works and many other valuable Twain items. “Celebrate Twain” takes place in the Knowledge Commons area of McKee Library. For more information on the event or the collection, please call 423.236.2788.
