Story Abstract

"America's Nutrition Leader" Zonya Foco brings her principles for healthy living to Southern through her eight-week program.

Story

“Diet” is a word familiar to most, frightening to many, and a fact of life that some believe they must learn to live with. Zonya Foco, however, has decided to throw dieting out the window and she wants you to join her.

Creator of "DIET FREE" lifestyle program, Foco is coming to Southern Adventist University with a message that includes principles for healthy living, and permanent lifestyle and weight changes. The kickoff to this eight-week program is free and has two time options: Tuesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. or Wednesday, September 28 at noon.

Foco will present eight habits for lifestyle change that together create the acronym “DIET FREE.” Topics such as water consumption, eating habits, bad fat versus good fat, processed foods, exercise, and more will be discussed. The complete eight-week program is $50 per person, which covers the cost of the participant packet. Ten weeks after the program has been completed, Foco will return to Southern on December 6 for a celebration with participants.

“Diets never fix anything,” says Phil Garver, dean of the School of Physcial Education, Health and Wellness. “This program is about making permanent lifestyle changes that will create lasting results.”

Garver says he first heard Foco speak six years ago at the 30th Annual National Wellness Conference in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He was immediately drawn to her enthusiasm and practical approach. When he saw Foco present again recently, Garver says his positive impression of her program and skills from years before was reinforced. It wasn't long after that when Garver and other faculty members came to the same conclusion.

“We felt inspired,” Garver says. “We thought she’d be great to have at Southern.”

Upon returning to campus, Garver presented the idea to the Employee Wellness Committee, all of whom welcomed the proposition.

Leslie Evenson, Wellness Institute director at the School of Physical Education, Health and Wellness, says it is inspirational how Foco created the “DIET FREE” program from personal experience, and is looking forward to having Foco here.

“We’ve always enjoyed hearing her speak,” Evenson says. “She has a dynamic personality which makes her a great presenter.”

For more information, call Phil Garver at 423.236.2852.
