Story Abstract

Proceeds to help fund Outdoor Leadership program and Biology Trail.

Story

The Southern 6 Trail Race will take place Sunday, February 19, on the campus of Southern Adventist University. The annual event, which takes runners down the campus’ Biology Trail, will also feature a separate Kid's K race. This will be the first year the Kid's K (for children under age 12) is held on the Biology Trail as well.

Five years ago, Joy McKee, Southern’s volunteer liaison for corporate and foundation relations, approached one of the owners of Rock/Creek Outfitters about collaborating on an event that would help raise money for Southern’s Outdoor Leadership program.

“He agreed to add us to their trail race series,” McKee said. “Southern 6 became the only Sunday race and the first race of the year.”

The race had over 200 participants last year and according to McKee, is looking to push 300 participants this year. Registration for the races begins at 11 a.m. at the Hickman Science Center. The main race starts at 1 p.m. and the Kid's K begins at 2:30 p.m.

“The race is great because it brings awareness of the Biology Trail to people in the Greater Chattanooga area as well as the students here on campus,” McKee said.

The fee for the main race is $30 in advance and $40 on race day. The race is $20 for Southern students and the Kid's K is $10. Proceeds for the event go to Southern’s Outdoor Leadership program and toward the development and maintenance of the Biology Trail.
