Story Abstract

Ranking calculated by interviews, surveys, and graduates' success.

Story

Southern Adventist University's School of Nursing has been recognized for providing one of the top graduate nursing degrees available in the nation by Masters Degree Online, an academic review website.

The website is dedicated to researching and rating the best graduate programs in the country and has evaluated Southern's Master of Science in Nursing degree to be one of the top 50 nursing graduate programs in the nation for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The goal of Masters Degree Online's top nursing list is to help prospective and current students gain information about the best graduate academic programs available. The methods used by the website to rank graduate nursing programs is based on a combination of interviews with deans in the field, surveys of students, program reputation, and previous graduate successes.

"It is an honor to be listed as one of the top schools in the nation, especially since this distinction was not sought after," said Barbara James, dean of the School of Nursing. "The graduate programs remain a “hidden jewel” in many circles, but we are proud of our mission, philosophy, and motto of providing Christ-centered excellence."

The School of Nursing offers both masters and doctoral graduate degrees. Students can also earn a dual Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration degree. Currently, 195 students are pursuing a graduate nursing degree at Southern.

Hospitals in the Chattanooga area have been consistently impressed with the quality of Southern's nursing program and praise the unique and talented nurses it produces.

"We hire a lot of Southern graduates, they make great nurses," said Janet Sullivan, nurse recruiter for Erlanger Health Systems. "Southern has a wonderful program."
