Southern Adventist University seeks to provide motivated and capable students with an enhanced interdisciplinary educational experience that emphasizes the integration of spiritual values into our knowledge of nature and society. The Program was created to give intellectually motivated students enriched learning experiences and a community of peers devoted to a vigorous life of the mind that encourages student responsibility for their learning. Southern Scholars welcome intellectual challenge and learning opportunities, both in and out of the classroom.
Southern Scholars is the interdisciplinary honors program of Southern Adventist University. Starting here, you can learn what the program offers to outstanding students, how to apply to the program, and what the program requirements are.
The 2017-2018 academic year promises to be another good one for the Southern Scholars program. We will begin our honors academic year with the Southern Scholars retreat, where we we will small group discussions on topics from Barbara Kingsolver's novel Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. In November several honors students will have the opportunity to accompany Dr. Peach to the National Collegiate Honors Council in Atlanta, Georgia.
This past year five students participated in the NCHC Partners-in-the-Parks (two to Philadelphia, one to the Grand Canyon, one to the Great Smoky Mtns. National Park, and one to Moutn Rainier National Park). Director Mark Peach co-led an Appalachian Trail: Harpers Ferry Partners-in-the-Park with Professor Christina McIntyre of Virginia Tech.
We are debuting our new honors freshman seminar course, thus expanding our honors curriculum.
We hope you will be a part of the exciting changes to Southern’s honors program. I look forward to meeting you soon!
