Southern Scholars

The Mission:NCHC logo

Southern Adventist University seeks to provide motivated and capable students with an enhanced interdisciplinary educational experience that emphasizes the integration of spiritual values into our knowledge of nature and society. The Program was created to give intellectually motivated students enriched learning experiences and a community of peers devoted to a vigorous life of the mind that encourages student responsibility for their learning. Southern Scholars welcome intellectual challenge and learning opportunities, both in and out of the classroom.

Southern Scholars is the interdisciplinary honors program of Southern Adventist University. Starting here, you can learn what the program offers to outstanding students, how to apply to the program, and what the program requirements are.

The 2016-2017  academic year promises to be another good one for the Southern Scholars program. We began our honors academic year with the Southern Scholars retreat, where we had small group discussions on topics from Marylynne Robinson's novel Gilead.  In September three Southern Scholars participated in the 2nd annual regional honors event called Ideathon, where they are meeting honors students from Lee University, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Chattanooga State Community College. In October seven honors students will be accompanying Dr. Peach to the National Collegiate Honors Council in Seattle, Washington.

Last summer four students participated in the NCHC Partners-in-the-Parks (two to Hawaii National Volcanoes Park, one to Glacier National Park, and one to Missouri National Recreational River Park).  Director Mark Peach co-led an Appalachian Trail: Harpers Ferry Partners-in-the-Park with Professor Christina McIntyre of Virginia Tech.

We are debuting our new honors social Psychology course taught by Dr. Tron Wilder, thus expanding our honors curriculum.

We hope you will be a part of the exciting changes to Southern’s honors program. I look forward to meeting you soon!
