School of Journalism & Communication
Dr. Linda Potter Crumley is the Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication. Her favorite thing about her job is that she gets to listen to people, a lifelong interest. She is fascinated by interpersonal relationships and the way that communication creates and maintains relationships.
Dr. Crumley earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from The University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation research, completed in 2002, focuses on how married couples communicate during conflict. Current research interests include the communication and relations among the “We” of God (see Genesis 1:26), parenting and deception, linguistic cues to physiological arousal, interpersonal gift-giving on short term mission trips, and the use of autoethnography as an intercultural research tool.
It is fun for Dr. Crumley to think about ideas and learn with her students. She teaches a variety of classes, currently including Communication Theory, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Communication Research, and Intercultural Communication.
Don, Dr. Crumley’s husband, is a computer programmer at Southern. They like boating, kayaking, hiking, reading, traveling, and getting to know students. Their three children are here, there, and everywhere, and Dr. Crumley says her heart is stretched to continents. She is grateful that God is everywhere, even when she is right here in Collegedale.
