ACADEMY SENIORS
 

Jeffrey A. Evans M.D. Memorial Scholarship

  • Must be academy senior
  • Award to be based upon faculty recommendation in regard to academic and/or musical accomplishment
  • Interest in pursuing a major in music and/or the sciences at Southern; if information on desired major is not yet available, then students are to be chosen who have shown exceptional talent/aptitude in those areas
  • Merit‐based
  • Awards of $1000 each to three SDA graduating academy seniors: one from Georgia‐ Cumberland Academy, one from Collegedale Academy, one from any graduating senior from an SDA academy within the Southern Union
  • Awards distributed at graduation
     

CHILDREN OF MINISTERS

James W. Hickman Scholarship Fund

  • Child of chaplain, minister, or missionary (20% of funds)
  • Preference from Florida/Forest Lake Academy
  • No award should exceed 25% of student annual tuition rate

Tony Y. T. and Delma A. Q. Chen Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Any major
  • Any class standing
  • Member in good standing of Walker Memorial SDA Church (Avon Park, FL)
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Willing to work
  • Financial responsibility
  • To encourage prospective university students of Walker Memorial SDA Church to attend Southern Adventist University

  • Former Law offenders (10% of fund)
  • Florida/Forest Lake Academy students preferred

Ruf Family Loan Fund

  • Sophomore through senior standing
  • Intent on SDA Church employment at regular denominational wages
  • Loan and Scholarship Committee recommends candidates

Appalachian Region Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Preference from eastern Appalachian region (Tennessee or western North Carolina)
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Worthy and deserving student
  • Willing to work part of way through their education
     

Chattanooga Downtown Lions’ Club Nursing Scholarship Fund

  • Chattanooga area resident
  • Nursing major
  • Earned GPA of 3.0 (“B”) or above
     

Wilfred and Kathryn Cowdrick Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Theology or education majors
  • Primary consideration to students from the Kentucky‐Tennessee Conference; if non available, secondary consideration will be given to students from any other SDA Conference within the Southern Union
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Financially accountable
  • Good citizenship in school and community
     

David and Carol Cotton Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Preference given, but not limited to 1) students with few SDA family or relatives, 2) SDA students with public school background, 3) students from Kentucky or Tennessee
  • Any field of study
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Demonstrates accountability in financial matters and good citizenship in school and community

 

Charles A. Davis Endowed Work Initiative Scholarship Fund

  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Students who are a resident of one of the following states in the southeastern United States: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financially worthy based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Evidence of initiative in working to contribute toward educational expenses, indicating a mature philosophy toward trying to stay out of debt; demonstrating through activities in university (not necessarily extra‐curricular) that s/he will make a contribution in life
     

Duge Family Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Pre‐Med major ( or pre‐med‐acceptable major) with intentions to practice in the South following medical school
  • Earned GPA of 3.0 (B) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Willing to work
  • Member of the SDA Church
  • Intentions to practice in the South following medical school
     

Mary Elizabeth Elam Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Any major
  • Resident of Kentucky
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
     

Don and Weslynne Sahly Family Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Freshman through senior standing
  • Preference to Canadian students
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Any grandchild of Don and Weslynne will be eligible for this scholarship for the years they are enrolled at SAU regardless of financial need, otherwise, preference given to worthy and deserving students meeting above criteria
     

Joseph and Helen Sahly Family Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Freshman through senior
  • Earned GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or above
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Any grandchild or great grandchild of Joseph and Helen Sahly will be eligible while enrolled at Southern (otherwise Canadian student preferred)
     

Izak and Elaine Wessels Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Students from South Africa, Germany or Norway
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Demonstrates accountability in financial matters, and good citizenship in school and community
     

John B. and Alice L. Wong Scholarship Endowment Fund

  • Religion‐Theology major
  • Chinese from mainland China demonstrating interest for the ministry
  • Initially a designee of and approved by the Eastern Asia Administrative Committee of SDA (EAAC) and recommended to (EAAC) be a recognized church leader in China
  • Verified by EAAC that student is in financial need and willing to work a minimum of 20 hours a week (full time during summer)
  • Member of SDA Church
  • Must sign statement confirming willingness to return to China upon completing education

  • Any junior or senior who is involved in a campus leadership position.
  • Submit a one‐page essay outlining his or her leadership role/leadership involvement in oncampus and/or outreach programs.

  • Must be accepted by the Student Mission/Task Force Committee to serve as a student missionary and/or Task Force volunteer
  • Successfully complete a one‐year “term” of service
  • Be accepted for enrollment Southern subsequent to “term” of service
     

WKGB Families’ Endowed Scholarship for Student Missionaries Fund

  • Earned GPA of 2.5 (“C+”) or better
  • Financial need based on Southern’s student aid policy
  • Member of SDA Church
  • A one‐year commitment to mission service (or intentions to serve one year), or as agreed upon by Southern’s chaplain and the established university missions program
