Story Abstract

Alumni, along with faculty and staff, are remembering three former faculty members who recently passed away - Frances Andrews, Lenna Lee Davidson, and Dan Rozell.  (Click on title for more information.)

Story

Frances Andrews, 1949 alumna and retired School of Journalism and Communication faculty, passed away at her home in Collegedale on Friday, May 27.  She retired from Southern in 1987 following a 38-year teaching career in various academies, high schools, and colleges.  One of her accomplishments as a student was being the first editor of the college newspaper, the Southern Accent, and later editor of the yearbook, Southern Memories.  The yearbook emblem she designed was later adopted as part of the official college logo and is still in use today in the SMC-ites affinity group communication pieces.  Andrews remained active in retirement by volunteering in her church and community.  She was honored by the Alumni Association in 2007 as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award during Homecoming Weekend.  A memorial service is scheduled for Sabbath, July 2, at 3 p.m. in the Collegedale SDA Church.  In lieu of flowers, she requested that gifts be given to the Frances Andrews Journalism Scholarship Fund, which was established in her honor by former Journalism students, faculty, and staff at the time of her retirement.  Gifts may be directed to the Advancement Office online at southern.edu/advancement or by mail to PO Box 370, Collegedale, TN  37315.

Lenna Lee Davidson, 87, School of Nursing faculty from 1968-81, wife of Robert (deceased) and mother of alumni Lee and Glenda (Maxson) Davidson of Berrien Springs, MI, Sylvia (Davidson) and Harold Mayer of Collegedale, TN, and Bryant and Joy (Southard) Davidson of Owasso, OK, passed away Tuesday, May 24.  A memorial service was held May 28 in Owasso.  In honor of her love for the university, Christian education and the nursing profession, memorial gifts may be given to the School of Nursing - Dean's Fund.  Online gifts may be directed to the Advancement Office at southern.edu/advancement or by mail to PO Box 370, Collegedale, TN   37315.

Dan Rozell, 1961 and '86 alumnus and former School of Business and Management faculty at Southern during the 80's and 90's, passed away in Arkansas on Friday, June 17, following an extended time of ill health.  A memorial service is being held in Arkansas for sometime during the last week of June.
