Associate professor Herman Odens, Ph.D., has brought a passion for research to the Chemistry Department at Southern. This year he taught Introduction to Research, guiding 16 students in six independent research projects involving medicinal chemistry.
The demand for more research on campus is increasing, and the department is collaborating with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to use their equipment while our research program expands.
“My goal is to work in three important areas of medicinal chemistry that are of high interest: cancer research, cardiovascular diseases, and infectious diseases,” Odens said. He is also applying for grants to develop a summer research program at Southern that will act similar to an internship—training students in research and providing a stipend for their work.
