Under the direction of Professor Patti Anderson, students in the Math Department are applying their skills to mathematical biology research.

Each student in the Mathematical Seminar class chooses a research topic and spends the semester learning how to apply math to research in current topics.

“This is their first real experience with the topic and with this type of research,” Anderson said.
Anderson has witnessed firsthand that the research often opens the students’ eyes to the possibilities in their future work. She also inspires them with her research in mathematical epidemiology (understanding and modeling the spread of disease). She is testing whether the flu shot makes a person contagious for up to 72 hours, and looking for nuances to add to the current models that exist.
