Story Abstract

Story

Can we all say a collective “Praise the Lord!” for the progression of communication technology? How amazing it is, and especially meaningful at this point in time for us, to be able to communicate with our kids instantly with text messaging, to “be there” for them when they have a question or want to share some new experience, and to send them those quick I love you’s & words of encouragement… and how much more amazing are video calls like iChat (Mac) or GoogleTalk! So awesome to see their face & expressions along with their voice! You can almost reach out and hug them! Almost…

Even after just a couple of weeks, on our first video chat, at one point I caught a glimpse of “I miss you” in his expression… It’s a good thing Esther has a care pack on the way with anti-homesickness pills (peanut m&m’s) for our son and his room mate… We can tell though, he is having such a wonderful time at SAU.

What a far cry from technology 28 years ago, away from home the first time for my Freshman year at Pacific Union College, my choices to stay in touch with family were writing a letter (I’ve always been lousy at that—too impatient), a huge phone bill, or a lot of gasoline to drive 6 hours home… It was great being away from home on my own, until later in the year, when I was making that drive home every other weekend… I think if Video Chat was around, I could have saved a lot on fuel!

So between calls, how do we deal with missing our kids? For me, much prayer, putting special care packages together, planning trips home (better get those Thanksgiving or Christmas airline ticket’s soon!), and generally keeping as busy as possible. Letting myself dwell on it, just isn’t productive…

It’s great to check in on his Facebook page too from time to time… seeing the crazy video’s lip synching to various songs, and seeing his excitement over experiencing the power of a “real storm” there in Tennessee, because you know he hadn’t experienced anything like that in California… LOL

It’s so helpful and encouraging though to see him having such a profoundly positive experience, and growing up ever more in Christ. Never underestimate the power of prayer for our kids, and for us. So keep the faith…staying close to the Author and Finisher of our faith… There is One called The Comforter… Taste and see that He lives up to His Name very well :)
