Whew! It has been a whirlwind. Haven’t written for a while. I had to have surgery on my knee on March 4 and I am just starting to feel like I’m in the land of the living.
I was having a conversation with a friend and we were trying to figure out if there was such a thing as “spring break” when we were in school. Needless to say, we couldn’t remember. All I know is that Christmas break zoomed by and before I could gather my thoughts (and funds), Spring Break had crept up on us.
Ryan had to stay on campus because the Film majors had a project they were working on. There was a part of me that was secretly thankful that I didn’t have to purchase a round trip plane ticket but the other part of me was saddened by the fact that I wouldn’t see my child until the end of April.
We had conflicts in our schedule for Parent Weekend so there was never plan to go. I was going on a planned trip and my husband had other obligations as well. I left for my trip and while I was away, I received a text and a picture on my phone from my 12 year old, Ross informing me that he and his dad were at Southern! The picture was of Ross standing in front of Wright Hall . Needless to say, I was shocked but wondered what happened and how it worked out. (I was on a cruise with 4 dear girlfriends celebrating turning a certain age) I didn’t find out the full story until I came home.
Apparently, one of Ryan’s friends text my husband on the Friday of Parent Weekend and asked him if he was planning on coming. She informed him that Ryan was really struggling with the fact that we were not going to be there and hinted that she was hoping that we would surprise him. Well, that sent my husband into real “daddy mode” and before he knew it he was online booking airline tickets that night. He woke my son up at 4am and told him that they were going to see Ryan! They left on a 7am flight and they really did surprise Ryan! My husband only spent the time with him. He didn’t participate in any of the weekend’s activities and my younger son Ross got to see his brother’s environment in college. It was a whirlwind, worthwhile visit and fulfilling for the 3 guys in my life. The bill came today for the impromptu visit; I’m still smiling……I guess there are some things you just can’t put a price on.
