Hitting the Right Note: The Effects of Music on Stress in College Students

Little empirical research has been done to determine whether listening to different musical genres can have different effects on a person's stress level. This study examined differences in heart rate while participants listened to four distinct musical genres. In addition, this study examined gender, ethnicity, and class-standing differences in stress level. A relationship was also tested for levels of stress and religiosity between groups. Results showed that heart rates were lowered while listening to music, although no significant differences between genres were found in this sample (n=30). Additionally, no significant demographic differences were found in levels of stress.
