English as a Second Language

The Purpose

Southern Adventist University offers a limited number of classes in English as a Second Language (ESL) to international students who would like to pursue a college degree but who lack the skill of speaking, writing, and reading in English. Southern provides students the environment and class structure to improve their English for professional use, all at a resonable cost—the equivalent of 12 hours regular tuition.

The Program

Southern provides classes for Intermediate and Advanced ESL students only. In order to enter the Intermediate Level, ESL students must have achieved a minimum score of 133 on the TOEFL Computer Based Test or 46 on the Internet Based Test. For the Advanced Level, ESL students must have achieved a minimum score of 173 on the TOEFL Computer Based Test or 61 on the Internet Based Test.

ESL students take classes such as Writing/Grammar, Reading/Discourse, and TOEFL Preparation.

Lab periods give students the opportunity to sharpen their language skills through interactive computer-based software, the Internet, and email.

Southern provides students the opportunity to study ESL in order to improve their English for professional use. The program also gives students the opportunity to take a limited number of credit hours in regular university classes, thus allowing students to begin their academic career. At the Intermediate Level, students take 3 credit hours of non-ESL classes for elective college credit; at the Advanced Level, students take 6 credit hours of non-ESL classes for elective college credit.
