Fall Orientation Schedule—August 19- August 28, 2014

Attendance is required by new students to all applicable events. Transfer students are highly encouraged to attend. 



Tuesday, August 19

9 a.m. - 10 a.m.

Parent Orientation, Lynn Wood Hall

Parents: come learn how to adjust to your child’s first year at college. Discover what they will need from you and how you can support them from home.

10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Parent Open House, Campus
   7 p.m. 

Welcome Party, Iles P.E. Center

An icebreaker and kickoff to a great year!

Scavenger Hunt/Ice Cream, Dining Hall

You will team up with your mentor group and will receive a list of tasks to do all over campus. The first ones to finish are the winners.

An introduction to resources on campus that will help you to succeed. Start off on the right foot. Come and learn the essentials that will assist you in having a successful freshman year.

10 a.m.

Student Services, Thatcher Hall Chapel

Campus ministries, career advising, counseling, disability support, student life, Tutoring, and Health Services

Southern has a department dedicated to serving students. It’s called Student Services. Come and discover how its programs, activities, and resources can serve you.

11 a.m.

Major/Minor Fair, Iles P.E. Center

1:30 p.m.

Academic/Department Orientation and Advising, Individual Schools/Departments

3:30 p.m.

 Secondary Education Major Orientation, Summerour Hall

After attending their major department orientation session, students interested in pursuing secondary education certification will meet with professors from the School of Education & Psychology.

4 p.m.

Pre-Med & Pre-Dent Major Orientation, Hickman Science Center Room 1311

 This is the place to be if you're planning on being pre-med or pre-dent. Come and learn what you need to know and how to get there.

  7 p.m.

Get Over It: The Power of Self-Advocacy, Thatcher Hall Chapel

8 p.m.

Your first college class. You will meet your professor, your mentor, and your classmates.

Organization Showcase, Iles P.E. Center

The ultimate stuff-to-do extravaganza. Here’s where you can see what your options are for getting involved on campus—in clubs, student organizations, music groups, department activities, the Southern Scholars—you name it. Supper will be available for purchase.

An orientation for students who previously attended a college or university.

Tuesday, August 26

12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

New Community Student Orientation, Presidential Banquet Room

An orientation for students who will not be living in the Residence Halls.

Wednesday, August 27

12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

Public High School Orientation, Presidential Banquet Room

An orientation for students who did not attend an SDA academy.

5 p.m.

International Student Orientation, Lynn Wood Hall Room 320

An orientation for students who came from countries outside of the United States.

Thursday, August 28

11 a.m.

President's New Student Dedication, Collegedale Church

12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

Home School Orientation, Presidential Banquet Room

7 p.m.


Academic Schools/Departments Welcome Parties, Individual Schools/Departments

An opportunity for fellowship with the professors and other students in your academic department. Take this time to socialize outside of the classroom so that when classes begin, you will recognize some faces.
