Getting a Social Security Number

Your Social Security Number allows you to accept a job on campus, once you have secured one. As a student working in the United States, your Social Security Number is used by the government to recognize you as an eligible taxpayer, as is the same with all citizens of the United States.

Most banks, cell phone company providers, and credit card companies normally ask for your Social Security number when you attempt to open to an account with them. It is your legal right to deny them this privilege.

What Do I Need in Order to Apply?

  • Letter from Human Resources verifying employment on campus
  • Letter from International Student Adviser regarding your immigration status and eligibility to work on campus (stop by our office to get it)
  • Valid Passport
  • I-20 Form
  • School ID
  • I-94 Form
