Awards

The School of Social Work has several awards and scholarships available for undergraduate students. For more information about scholarships and awards available at Southern Adventist University, visit the Finances website.  

 

               *2010 award recipients and professors*

Academic Excellence

  • The academic excellence award is given to a graduating senior with this highest accumulative SAU grade point average.
  • The student should be in senior year and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • This award may be given to more than one student who have the same GPA and it can be given together with any other reward.
  • The decision must be taken by mid January.   

Leadership

  • The departmental leadership award is given to the graduating senior who has shown leadership in class, the School of Social Work club, Phi Alpha club, and department-sponsored activities.
  • This is a senior level award given to one student nominated by his/her peers and it can be given together with the Academic Excellence Award if the students meets the criteria

Social Work Major of the Year

  • The social work major of the year award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates academic achievement, reflects the values of the School of Social Work, participates in service activities, is an active member of the School of Social Work club, achieves the recognition of peers and professionals, and demonstrates support of staff and the school. This award is determined by faculty nomination with peer input.
  • This is a senior level award that can be given together with the Academic Excellence Award if the student meets the criteria.

Family Studies Major of the Year

  • Similar as above

Ed Lamb Community Service

  • Social Work or Family Studies Major
  • Freshman-junior status
  • Earned grade-point average of at least a C+ (2.5 overall)
  • Displayed extensive community service leadership
  • This award can be given together with the Academic Excellence Award if the student meets the criteria.

NASW

  • BSW Student of the Year awards honor two NASW student members (1 BSW and 1 MSW) who are enrolled in accredited social work programs in Tennessee, create a positive influence on classmates for the profession, and maintain academic achievement.
  • This award can be given together with the Academic Excellence Award if the student meets the criteria. Nominations are done by the field instructors and the final decision is taken by the faculty.

President's Community Service

  • Demonstrated Public Service - The service should be beyond the normal scope of employment or school activities
  • Nominee’s effectiveness - An evaluation of the nominee’s effectiveness shall be judged by his/her impact on individuals, groups, or organizations served. This should include evidence of the success of his/her service, in terms of improvement of communities, volunteer work programs, charitable service, and leadership roles in community.
  • Documentation - So that the decision process can be as objective as possible, each nomination should be accompanied by a complete and careful documentation of the candidate’s public service contribution.
