From the Top Auditions
As a young musician, you have a chance at an incredible opportunity to perform on NPR's From the Top, a nationally-syndicated radio program that "celebrates the power of music in the hands of extraordinary young people." We want to see you on the Tivoli Theatre stage for our local Chattanooga show on Thursday, January 23, 2014! Submit your application by Friday, November 1st.

If you are selected to appear on From the Top, you will be introduced to a world of possibilities in classical music! In addition to a once-in-a-lifetime performance experience and a generous scholarship wo attend the New England Conservatory, From the Top will teach you how to be a passionate advocate for the arts in your local community and be there to support you with projects that engage your community and your peers. And that's not all! If you're a great musician with a lot of potential but also a lot of financial need, you are eligible for a scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to further your music education, connect you with a high-quality instrument, and many other possibilities.
If you are studying music in the United States and you are between the ages of 8 and 18 and have not yet enrolled in a college or conservatory, then you are eligible! From the Top accepts solo instrumentalists, vocalists, young composers, small ensembles (8 members or fewer), and large ensembles (9 members or more). From the Top's primary focus is to present music fom the western classical tradition, however the program occasionally features other non-pop genres including folk music, spirituals, and acoustic or piano jazz.
You can fill out an application to appear on From the Top through the show's website (fromthetop.org/casting). In addition to the application, you will need to submit at least two unedited, unenhanced audition samples. Although an audio recording is acceptable, a video recording is strongly preferred. There is a $50 application fee required as well.
For your audition, choose pieces to record that meet the following criteria:
1) They showcase your best technique and mastery of your instrument/voice.
2) They are naturally exciting pieces with character and flair. (Need suggestions? Ask WSMC!)
3) They are pieces you have worked on for at least six months
and performed at least three times.
Part of what makes From the Top an inspirational program is not only your terrific performance, but also your story! You have a unique story about your experience with music, how you came to love it and play it, and how it changes your life. Think about the details that make your story unique: Do you practice in the same room with your pet parrot? did you start music lessons on the trumpet before realizing that trombone way cooler? Is there a particular teacher you really look up to? When you apply to be on the show, share your story with From the Top!
