History Club

The History Club is open to anyone who has an interest in history. The club has participated in many fun activities, including helping preserve history through community service projects like collecting oral histories, landscaping the historic Civil War battlefield at Chickamauga, worshiping together at special club convocations and vespers, and participating in fun activities like a costume gala and election parties.

Adventist Peace Fellowship (APF)

The Adventist Peace Fellowship chapter at Southern Adventist University replaced the successful Global Policy and Services Club on September 2016. The Adventist Peace Fellowship, or APF, is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 that seeks to raise consciousness about the centrality of peacemaking and social justice. APF supports public service, activism, advocacy, and scholarship that reflects the radical spirit of many Adventist pioneers. APF welcomes all Adventists and friends of Adventists to join our network and add their voices and their talents to the work of peacemaking.

The Society of Political Science (SoPS) Club

The Society of Political Science Club is open to anyone who has an interest in political science, pre-law, community involvement, global development, and/or international relations. The club holds regular debates during the winter semester and works with local attorneys who train our members how to argue cases, consider evidence, and courtroom procedure. Our largest function each year is participation in the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL), which takes place each November.

A delegation from Southern travels to Nashville for four days and competes against other colleges and universities throughout Tennessee.  These delegates argue cases, lobby, publish news broadcasts, argue bills, and act as elected officials within TISL.

The National Honor Society: Phi Alpha Theta ΦΑΘ

Phi Alpha Theta, an American honor society, was established on March 17, 1921. It is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promotes and assists historical research and publication by its members in a variety of ways.

As part of its commitment to academic excellence, Phi Alpha Theta continues to participate actively, through its Executive Director and President, in the Association of College Honor Societies. Phi Alpha Theta enjoys the distinction of being one of three original departmental honor societies with membership in the ACHS.

Members of Phi Alpha Theta are eligible to apply for the honor society's awards and scholarships offered each year. Phi Alpha Theta awards scholarships and other prizes on the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level. All student members are eligible to present a paper at our Biennial Convention and at the Phi Alpha Theta Regional Meeting in their area.

There is a one-time $50 national induction fee. Inductions are usually during the first semester of each year. 

Sigma Alpha

Sigma Alpha is Southern's chapter of the national history honor society Phi Alpha Theta. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is achieved by filling out an application and paying one-time dues. Membership is valid for life and includes a one-year subscription to The Historian, the academic journal of Phi Alpha Theta, and opportunities to apply for Phi Alpha Theta sponsored scholarships.

After reviewing your application, Lisa Bilbrey Hyder, the office manager for the History and Political Studies Department, will contact you. Approved applicants will submit the induction fee to her at Brock Hall 3010.

Are you enrolled as a History or Political Studies major or minor?
Do you hold a minimum cumulative grade of B (3.1 on a 4.0 scale) in your history and political studies courses?
Is your cumulative GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale?
Have you completed at least 12 hours of history or political studies college courses?
If you can answer "yes" to each of the questions above, fill out Part III completely. Any courses you are currently taking MUST show the current grade.
III. Class Information
List all completed courses in History or Political Studies. Do not include courses which you are taking this semester. Also, show by name the college or university where you took each course and the grade which you received.
