In the early 1970s, Bowater Pulp and Paper Corporation (later Bowater Southern Division) began setting aside tracts of land within its timberlands for preservation in their natural state. 

These areas were designated as "pocket wilderness" and were managed with no logging or development other than hiking trails and, in some cases, primitive backcountry campsites.
