Runis of the Church of Ujarra

The Ruins of the Church of Ujarrás are the remains of one of Costa Rica's oldest churches, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción. Located in the picturesque Orosi Valley, the church was first built in the 16th century and rebuilt with limestone in 1693, eventually being abandoned after a series of devastating floods and earthquakes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The ruins are now a National Monument and a popular site for visitors, offering a glimpse into Costa Rica's colonial history within a peaceful garden setting. According to legend, the church was built around a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was found by an Indigenous fisherman and could not be moved, and is also said to have miraculously protected the village from pirate attacks.
