Alumni Notes
"One of my most memorable moments from Southern was with Maestro Orlo Gilbert and
the Southern Symphony in the early 1990s. We performed Mahler Symphony No. 1 'Titan.'
I never dreamed that I would perform something of this magnitude while I was studying
at Southern."
Joseph E. Choi,'95
"Directed studies in orchestral conducting made realize how much more I had to learn
in order to become a professional orchestra conductor. From that point on, it was
constant catching up and tears during my conducting lessons, but in the end those
tears became experiences and joy in music making that I am now able to share with
other musicians who I have the joy of working and making music with."
Joseph E. Choi,'95
"I loved being part of a whole in Southern’s music ensembles. To sing for one purpose—to
praise God—with a group of friends and colleagues is one of the most moving and amazing
experiences one can have on earth."
Christina Liem,'09
"My time at Southern has given me the confidence and resources to teach a well-rounded
music education program. Many times in my first year of teaching I have felt comfortable
enough to seek guidance from my previous music professors. They care not only about
your musical success, but your spiritual growth as well. It is a holistic program
that involves mind, body, and soul."
