
SERVICE-LEARNING COURSE PROPOSAL
Overview:
Service-learning is an educational methodology, which combines student service experiences
in the community with explicit academic learning objectives and deliberate reflection.
In the words of the National Service Learning Clearinghouse, service-learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful
community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience,
teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

Include the following Syllabus Statement:
This is a service-learning class. Students are expected to use what they learn in
the classroom to make a difference in the community (locally or globally). Reflection
component will enable the students to describe and examine how the course provided
them an example of how to use their career (as applicable) to serve others and to
what degree has the course affected their commitment and to serve long-term.
Review Protocol:
- Submit Service-Learning Course Proposal and supporting syllabus to Christian Service Program.
- The proposal will be reviewed by the Christian Service Committee.
- If approved by the Christian Service Committee, the chair will present the proposal for approval at the General Education (Gen. Ed.) Committee.
- If approved by the General Education Committee, the chair of Gen Ed will present the checklist for final approval at Undergraduate Council.
- If the course is approved by Undergraduate Council, the chair of the Christian Service Program will notify the instructor.
