2. Understand Journal Guidelines
Every journal publishes Author Guidelines (also called Instructions for Authors or Submission Guidelines). Treat these as your formatting bible.

3. Manuscript Structure (IMRaD)
The IMRaD format (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) is the standard structure for empirical research manuscripts across most scientific disciplines.

Hyland's CARS model has three moves for structuring the introduction:

5. Writing the Methods

- Participants / Subjects: Sampling method, inclusion/exclusion criteria, sample size justification, demographic characteristics
- Setting: Where the study was conducted (laboratory, field, online, specific institutions)
- Data collection instruments: Surveys, interviews, equipment, protocols; include validation/reliability information
- Procedures: Step-by-step account of what was done, in what order, and under what conditions
- Statistical analysis: Software used, tests applied, significance level, handling of missing data, assumptions checked
- Ethical approvals: IRB/IACUC protocol numbers, consent process, data protection measures
5.2 Reporting Standards

- Logical flow: Organize by research question or hypothesis, not by the order you ran analyses
- Report all relevant results: Include null findings and negative results; selective reporting damages credibility
- Statistical precision: Report exact p-values (not just p < 0.05), effect sizes, and confidence intervals
- Refer to figures/tables: Guide readers to visual data but don't repeat every number in the text
- Present tense: Use present tense for what the data/shows ("Figure 1 shows..." not "Figure 1 showed...")
- Avoid interpretation: Save "why" for the discussion. The results say "what," not "so what."
7. Writing the Discussion
The discussion interprets your results, connects them to the broader literature, and articulates their significance. This is where you make the case for why your findings matter.

13. Submission Process
13.1 The Submission Steps
- Create journal account — Ensure all corresponding author information is current
- Upload manuscript files — Follow journal's file structure (manuscript, figures, cover letter, etc.)
- Enter metadata — Title, abstract, keywords, authors, affiliations, funding info
- Suggest reviewers — Provide 3-6 names with emails and institutional affiliations (avoid conflicts of interest)
- Sign ethics declarations — Confirm originality, no concurrent submission, author agreement
- Submit and confirm — Review the submission summary before final confirmation

Your response to reviewers is as important as the revised manuscript itself. It demonstrates professionalism and shows you took their feedback seriously.
