Off to a Good Start - English Majors Contribute to Community Through Southern Connections Class
English majors begin building relationships that are crucial to college success in their orientation class Southern Connections. As the name suggests, the course encourages new majors to connect with each other, department professors, older student mentors, campus resource staff, and the surrounding community. For the first community service day, the class headed just over White Oak Mountain to help the Collegedale Library with its to-do list: picking up litter, dusting, re-organizing books, checking DVD cases, and washing windows. In return, Library director Joanne Stanfield provided snacks (including homemade brownies!), which made each student feel appreciated. Later, after lunch at the closest Mexican restaurant, faculty sponsor Jodi Ruf noted that "this group talked and laughed like old friends before the morning was over. It's going to be a good year."
