Partners in the Parks
Many of our students have had the opportunity to participate in this outdoor experiential
learning program coordinated by the National Collegiate Honors Council with the National
Park Service. Our students have attended programs at Independence Hall, the Grand
Canyon, the Great Smoky Mtns. National Park, and Mount Rainier National Park. Additionally,
Scholars Director Mark Peach has had the opportunity for the second year to co-lead
a Partners in the Parks in the Great Smoky Mtns. National Park.
Conferences
In the fall of 2016, Southern Scholars attended the National Collegiate Honors Council
conference. Seven students traveled to Seattle in October, attended sessions, met
other honors students, and brought home a variety of new ideas for building our honors
program. In March 2017, ten students traveled to Asheville for the Southern Regional
Honors Council conference where Shanti James presented “Seeking the Anatomy of the
Soul: Researching the Neuroscience and Philosophy of Spiritual Experiences,” Imani
Hamilton co-presented “The Urban PIP Experience,” and a group of Southern students
presented “Honors Program to Honors College: Logistics, Benefits, and Detriments of
the Transition.” We are extremely proud that several of our students had the opportunity
to share their research at the Southern Regional Honors Council. Overall, 25% of Southern
Scholars have attended honors conferences this year. This year, the National Collegiate
Honors Council Conference will occur in Atlanta, GA from November 8-12, 2017. The
opportunity to attend this conference could be yours!
Southern Scholars Reading Room!
The Southern Scholars room in McKee Library is an excellent resource for Southern
Scholars. This room has limited access for only Scholars Students. This room is open
for Southern Scholars to study in and is used for our Honors Council Meetings. Additionally,
Scholars have faculty lending privileges through McKee Library.
