Research Opportunities

Archaeology majors and minors take two summer classes that will equip them with practical skills. RELB455 - ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELDWORK (R-4) provides students with hands-on experience and training in archaeological fieldwork. They will assist in the supervising of excavation drawings, registering, reading of pottery, and related work, gaining practical skills that are invaluable in the field.RELB340 - MIDDLE EAST STUDY TOUR (R-3) (R-4) focuses on the region's archaeological, historical, and geographical study, emphasizing the comparative analysis of cultures, locations, and events as they relate to the Bible.

Docenting at the Lynn. H. Wood Archaeological Museum

As an Archaeology major, you will take RELP257 - MUSEUM EDUCATION (SERV-2). This class provides students with hands-on experience and training, emphasizing docent training at the Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum, interpretive methods for touring visitors, and general principles of museum education.

The Dever Research Library

The library is a reference library only and contains all of William G. Dever's publications. It is one of the most significant libraries for Near Eastern archaeology. The long-out-of-print final reports of excavations include Akko, Beth Shean, Jericho, Jerusalem, Megiddo, Lachish, Hazor, and Gezer, among many others. These site reports provide researchers with firsthand access to the primary sources of archaeological research, such as the architecture, pottery, and essential objects found at type sites throughout the region.

Levantine Ceramic Typology Class

As an Archaeology Major, you will take RELP435 - LEVANTINE CERAMIC TYPOLOGY. This class uses the William G. Dever Sherd Collection, one of the finest collections in North America, for teaching pottery typology. Having been assembled over a period of 40 years, it consists of more than 300 sherds from the Chalcolithic to the Arab periods from Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Syria, Anatolia, and Mesopotamia.
