MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION FAQ

WHAT IS MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an additional level of security to help protect your account against increasingly sophisticated security threats. It verifies your identity using your Southern credentials along with an additional secure authentication method, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app or a passkey.

MFA Explained

WHY USE MULTIPLE METHODS FOR MFA?

We recommend registering more than one authentication method whenever possible. Having multiple methods available can help ensure that you can still access your account if one method or device is unavailable.

You can view and manage your authentication methods by going to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and signing in with your Southern email address.

IS THE MICROSOFT AUTHENTICATOR APP REQUIRED?

Yes. You will need to register your account with the Microsoft Authenticator app. If Microsoft Authenticator has not been registered for your account, you may be prompted to set it up when you sign in.

The Microsoft Authenticator app is free and available from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. It allows you to quickly approve or deny sign-in requests and can also generate verification codes when your device does not have cellular or Wi-Fi service.

WHAT IS A PASSKEY?

A passkey is a secure, passwordless way to verify your identity. Passkeys can use your device's built-in security features, such as Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, a PIN, or a compatible security key.

If prompted to create a passkey during sign-in, follow the instructions provided by Microsoft. You can also manage your registered authentication methods at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.

HOW CAN I VIEW OR MODIFY MY MFA METHODS?

Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup to view and modify your authentication methods. From there, you can add or remove supported methods associated with your account.

We recommend registering more than one authentication method whenever possible.

DO I NEED A SMARTPHONE TO USE MFA?

You will need a compatible device or authentication method. The Microsoft Authenticator app can be installed on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

Depending on your device and account configuration, you may also be able to use a passkey with features such as Windows Hello, Face ID, Touch ID, or a compatible security key.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO WIFI OR CELLULAR SERVICE?

Microsoft Authenticator can generate a one-time verification code even when your device does not have cellular or Wi-Fi service.

Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and select your Southern.edu account to view the verification code. When signing in, choose the option to use another verification method and select the option to enter a verification code.
