STUDY AND MEMORIZATION TIPS
Here are some helpful hints for studying /recalling information:
Study under parallel conditions:
If possible, study under the same conditions you will be tested under. For example,
if you have caffeine before you study for a test, have caffeine before you take the
test. Try studying in the same room you will be taking the test in. You can use certain
reference points in the room to help you remember concepts or ideas.
Anthropomorphize:
This means taking non-human things and giving them human characteristics. For example,
you could remember how signals are conducted along a neuron by describing it as people
running up and down a hotel hallway as doors open and close.
Use your fingers and thumbs:
as a memory tool. Link different words or names to specific finders and memorize which
go where.
Imaginary room technique:
Visualize a room you are familiar with. Then visualize all of the major objects in
the room. The next step is to individually link specific information details to each
object in the room. You can use your body as well for a better visual.
Test yourself:
or have someone test you on the material to find out your strong and weak areas. You
can use review questions at the end of each chapter or materials the teacher has given
you.
Use colors:
Use a different colored highlighter for each general topic within the study material.
The colors will help you separate and organize the information in your head.
Use your senses:
Use as many senses as possible—sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste! Bottom line
is, the more of your senses that you utilize in the study and memorization process,
the better recall you will have during the test. Using a specific scent such as oranges
or peppermint when studying, and then reactivating or reapplying that scent right
before the test will help with recall of what you studied. It's like smelling apple
pie and automatically thinking of grandma's kitchen.
