School of Social Work

The Southern Adventist University social work program has been in existence since the 1980s. The School of Social Work offers BSW and MSW degrees as well as minors in behavioral science and sociology. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has accredited the BSW program since 1998, and the MSW program since its inception in 2010.

The goals of the social work program are directly related to the mission statement of Southern Adventist University as both entities declare and practice commitment to Christ, intellectual and personal development, professional development and commitment, and service to the church and the community.

Our Mission

The mission of Southern Adventist University’s social work program is to prepare students within a Christian learning environment for service and excellence in generalist, evidence-based social work practice.
The social work program offers students an opportunity to gain basic social work knowledge, values, and practice skills in a liberal arts educational setting. The goal is to prepare students for entry-level generalist baccalaureate practice, for graduate education, and for service to the church and to the broader community. The social work curriculum is built on a liberal arts foundation intended to broaden and enrich the student.

Bachelor of Social Work

Based on a broad liberal arts foundation, Southern’s Bachelor of Social Work program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Graduates of the undergraduate program can find entry-level employment in social work or may pursue further studies. Through the field placement program, students will confront many of the issues discussed in the classroom. Southern’s Christian environment enhances students’ understanding of service to individuals and communities.

Master of Social Work

Southern’s Master of Social Work program prepares students for careers in service and advocacy. Students with a Bachelor of Social Work from an accredited social work program can finish in as little as 12 months. Others with an undergraduate degree in a different area can finish in as little as two years when enrolled full time.

A Master of Social Work degree is offered with the following emphases: (Emphases offered each year are determined based on student interest.)

  • Crisis and Emergency Management
  • Mental Health Practices in Social Work
  • School Social Work

The Commission on Accreditation (COA) of the Council on Social Work Education at its 2018 meeting voted reaffirmation of the accreditation to Southern Adventist University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Accreditation is granted from 2017-2025 per CSWE.
