Why English at Southern?

Southern’s English Department has a balanced curriculum of literature and writing classes that provides students with valuable communication and analytical skills.

Job placement prospects are very favorable for secondary English teachers; the demand is greater than the supply

We in the English Department will not only educate you to your full potential, but we will also guide and help you in launching your career. All of our graduates in the last ten years are now in careers of their choice.

Multidisciplinary curriculum includes communication, reading, writing, history, and analytical thinking.

Opportunities are available on and off campus for students to publish their writings.

Half of our graduates score within the top 10 percent on nationwide literature tests.

Beyond the Classroom

Academic programs are complemented with practical learning experiences in the community and beyond.

English Club

The English Club is a campus-wide club for students who want to participate in events and activities related to literature and the humanities. Taking trips to the Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta, watching literature-related films, helping the community through service projects, and worshiping together at club vespers are some of the fun ways that the English Club celebrates literature outside of classes.

Writer's Club

Writer's Club is a group of students who enjoy writing and try out their literary creations on each other. The group meets one evening a month to eat dinner (for free) and have each attendee read a piece of writing aloud to everyone else. Every meeting produces surprises, entertainment, and a satisfied feeling in the stomach. The club also participates in Community Service Day and hosts social events.
