Reference & Instruction Policy
A foundational aspect of the education provided at Southern Adventist University is
library instruction and reference services that will enable students to find, evaluate,
and use a diverse array of information effectively, ethically, and legally.
- Instruction Classes

- Introduction to Library Research: This class focuses on the basics of library research, utilizing and evaluating sources, and determining the hierarchy of evidence and types of sources. It is appropriate for Freshman and Sophomore courses.
- Advanced Library Research: This class focuses on in-depth research techniques. It is appropriate for upper-division research courses and graduate courses.
- Understanding Copyright: This class offers an overview of the most current copyright practices. It is appropriate for upper-division research courses.
- Course-specific Presentations: Professors can request course-specific presentations catered to research assignments.

- Best Practices for Research: In this workshop, librarians work with students on a one-on-one basis to find the best sources for their assignments.
- PowerNotes: In this workshop, librarians have a step-by-step demonstration of how to set up and use PowerNotes.

- Research Coaching
- Students, faculty, and staff receive research assistance for any assignment or project with a librarian during an in-person or online appointment.
- Students are encouraged to bring a copy of their assignment with them.
- SMS
- Faculty members need to contact a librarian a week in advance to schedule information literacy sessions for their classes.
- Students, faculty, or staff needing help with research are strongly encouraged to make in-person or online research coaching appointments with the librarians. Librarians accommodate walk-ins on a limited basis.
- When meeting with librarians, students, faculty, or staff are encouraged to bring an electronic or hard copy of the assignment or research project for which they need help.
