Which Half?

Students were recently given a sheet of paper that looked like what is shown below. The paper was divided in half by a line. Above the line was a question and below the line was a space with a single dot.

Responses by the class were an interesting investigation into what critical thinking is: the analysis of a person's own thinking. Class members were evenly divided over three class periods. Individuals had strong feelings about their preferences. 

We have to wonder, Why?
