Why this degree at Southern?
A Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness is the perfect field of study
for those who want to become advocates for healthy living. This degree equips graduates
to work in wellness coaching, corporate wellness programs, and community health organizations,
or to pursue advanced degrees in public health, nutrition, or wellness management.
With a strong foundation in wholistic health content, health risk evaluation skill
and behavior change strategies, graduates are ready to promote well-being across diverse
populations.
Employment of Health and Wellness workers is projected to grow 13 percent from 2014
to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will be driven by efforts
to improve health outcomes and to reduce healthcare costs by teaching people healthy
habits and behaviors and explaining how to use available healthcare services. Southern
Adventist University’s Health and Wellness degree program is accredited by the National
Wellness Institute.
Upon graduation, students with a 2.75 GPA or higher are eligible to apply to be a
Certified Wellness Practitioner. There are three steps to become a Certified Wellness
Practitioner: complete a certified Wellness Practitioner Application Online, send
Transcripts to the National Wellness Institute, and submit an application fee of $240.00.
Recognized nationally, the designation symbolizes an individual’s strong academic
preparation, professional competency in wellness programming, and commitment to continuing
education, scholarship, and professional development. The median annual wage for health
educators and community health workers was $43,840 in May 2015.
